RASD is partnering with the Geohazard Risk Mapping Initiative (GRMI) to implement “Climate Justice in an Unequal World: New Insights from Developed and Developing Countries.” This project aims to contribute to bridging the theoretical and practical gaps in global climate justice policies and negotiations, with a focus on Nationally Determined Contributions. It is a desk-based study with a comparative and GIS-informed approach, informed by the ND-Gain country index, the INFORM risk index, and the Global Climate Risk index. Outputs will include an academic paper and a policy brief to support policy engagement and advocacy.

Objectives

The objectives of the project are to:
• Systematically analyse how climate justice dimensions are reflected in national climate policies and commitments.
• Compare justice framings and priorities in developed and developing countries.
• Understand how global climate risk and vulnerability indices are employed in the real world.
• Identify cross-cutting patterns, gaps, and limitations in the translation of justice principles into policy commitments.
• Produce evidence that supports both academic research and practical climate justice advocacy.

Why this project matters
Climate change does not affect everyone equally. Many countries that have contributed least to the problem are facing the hardest impacts. At the same time, climate decisions are often made without fully considering fairness or inclusion.

This project helps explain how ideas of justice and fairness appear in nationally determined contributions. By turning research into clear and useful knowledge, this study will support fairer climate action and help communities, advocates, and decision-makers better understand what climate justice means in practice.
